ACKS II Errata Nov 2024

This thread is for ACKS II errata discovered after the ACKS II files were sent to the printer (11/20/24).

Revised Rulebook
P. 55, Swashbuckler template, “Performance (singing)” => “Performance (singing)
P. 66, Under Class Proficiencies, “Proficiency Progression” and “Priestess Proficiency List” should be in bold but are not.

P. 72, Warlock Level Progression table, 10th level row, * is mis-formatted.

P. 94, Nobiran Wonderworker Templates table, there should not be a red line separating the rows; these red lines do not appear on the other template tables.

P. 129, Adventuring Equipment table:
“Firewood Bundle (5 logs) 1cp 2 1/2” => “Firewood Bundle (4 logs) 1cp 2”
(e.g. the weight of a firewood bundle is 2 st)

P. 130, Domesticated Animals table:
“Elephant, War 3,500gp” => “Elephant, War 2,000gp”

P. 130, Foodstuffs table:
“Oil, Olive (1 pint) 7 cp” => “Oil, Olive (1 pint) 2cp”

NOTE: The Edict of Prices affirms a price for olive oil of 2cp per pint for ordinary olive oil and 7cp per pint for fine extra-virgin olive oil. The price listed in ACKS II for olive oil on p. 130 is the price of extra-virgin olive oil. However, the price for olive oil on the Merchandise table (RR 374) and on the Olive Groves write-up (JJ 435) is 2cp per pint. I am therefore changing the Foodstuffs price to reflect the cheaper price. Both are historical and plausible but there’s no reason to be asymmetrical and there isn’t room in the table for two olive oil entries.

P. 133:
Trap, ceiling collapse: “2d6” => “1d6”
Trap, portcullis: “3d6” => “1d6”
Trap, rolling rock: “3d6” => “1d6”

P. 140: “The chief historical examples are Sumerian overlapping plate armor and Roman lorica segmentata.” => “The chief historical examples are Mycenean overlapping plate armor and Roman lorica segmentata.”

P. 143: The effects of garlic are incorrect. The proper effects of garlic are found on MM p. 322.

P. 144: “Common oil is burned in a lantern to give light. Common oil is usually olive oil, castor oil, or animal extract. Military oil is a weapon made of naphtha, and cannot be easily doused with water.” =>
“Common oil is burned in a lantern to give light. Common oil is made of a clean-burning distillation of naphtha. Military oil is a volatile concoction of refined naphtha, quicklime and sulfur that cannot be easily doused with water.”

NOTE: This change was necessitated by the fact Romans primarily used olive oil for their lamps. (I thought they primarily used castor oil, which is much more expensive.) This is problematic for two reasons. First, olive oil is notably cheaper than what we call common oil so the price is wrong. Second, the brightness of burning olive oil is not much more than that of a candle, and not comparable to a torch. We therefore assume that, along with the existence of better lanterns, there exist also better lamp oils. A distilled naphtha (proto-kerosene) was within the technological capabilities of the Byzantines, would be of appropriate price, and would give off the appropriate light in a clean and smoke-free amount.

P. 148, Gatehouse entry: Add a sentence at the end of the entry that reads “A map of a gatehouse can be found in AX1: The Sinister Stone of Sakkara.”

P. 149, Granary/Warehouse entry: Delete the sentence at the end of the entry that reads “A map of a granary can be found in AX1: The Sinister Stone of Sakkara.”

P. 150:
Ceiling Collapse Trap: “10’ radius” => “10’ x10’ area”
Deadfall: “5’ radius” => “5’ diameter”

P. 151, Note in Walls: “The frontage available on the wall is only enough for the first two ranks of troops, leaving the remaining five ranks (requiring 1,800 square feet) unaccounted for.” => “The frontage available on the wall is only enough for the first two ranks of troops, leaving the remaining four ranks (requiring 1,800 square feet) unaccounted for.”

P. 161: "(such as 6 spikes, 6 torches, 20 arrows, etc.) " => "(such as 6 spikes, 20 arrows, etc.) "

P. 189: “Growth” => “Growth*”
e.g. Growth is reversible.

P. 189: “Spellward Zone” => “Spellwarded Zone”

P. 189: Remove the asterisk next to the “Spirit of Healing” spell on first column of row 28.

P. 191: “Spellward Zone” => “Spellwarded Zone”

P. 191: Remove the asterisk next to the “Spirit of Healing” spell on first column of row 14.

P. 202, Capsizing Wave Vessel Speed table: The Vessel Speeds are incorrect.
960’ or faster => 360’ or faster
900’ => 330’
840’ => 300’
780’ => 270’
720’ = 240’
640’ or slower => 210’ or slower

P. 213: The Delay Death spell appears in the book but is not on the Divine spell list. This isn’t actually errata as this was deliberate. The spell was good enough to appear in the book but the spell list was already full.

P. 244: Skinchange, “This spell allows the caster to assume the form of a normal or giant animal. (See the Animals type in the ACKS II Monstrous Manual for details) that is native to his location.” =>
“This spell allows the caster to assume the form of a normal or giant animal (see the Animals type in the ACKS II Monstrous Manual for details) that is native to his location.”

P. 249, “Spellward zone” => “Spellwarded zone

P. 256, Trollblood, “Even if the caster is reduced below 0 hit points, he will continue to regenerate, and he will be have no need for bed rest if he regenerates to 1 or more hp before the spell expires.” => “Even if the caster is reduced below 0 hit points, he will continue to regenerate, and he will have no need for bed rest if he regenerates to 1 or more hp before the spell expires.”

P. 256, Vigor, “This spell does not otherwise stack with effects that influence strength, but it does stack with the character’s normal bonus or penalty from Strength and with effects that alter size.” => “This spell does not otherwise stack with effects that influence Strength, but it does stack with the character’s normal bonus or penalty from Strength and with effects that alter size.”

P. 260, Webbed, “the is vulnerable” => “the creature is vulnerable”

P. 265: “emit light bright enough in a radius” => “emit bright light in a radius”

P. 276: "If the throw succeeds, that adventurer gathers 10 st of firewood (enough to maintain a campfire for 4 hours). " => “If the throw succeeds, that adventurer
gathers 8 st of firewood (enough to maintain a campfire for 4
hours).”
e.g. 8 st is enough to sustain 4 hours of campfire so foraging yields 8 st

P. 347, the paragraph in the top left reading “The Tarkaun… deployed.” should not be bolded.

P. 355, At the bullet point “The ruler must consult the senate before invading another realm.” There is a page break wrongly inserted after “before”.

P. 421, the EXAMPLE box “Sometimes a divine spellcaster…the domain morale.” should not be an example box.

P. 423, “A character can earn XP from his domain income. Domain income is the total of the ruler’s land, service, tax, trade, and tribute revenue, less his garrison, liturgy, maintenance, tithe, tribute, and upkeep expenses. If domain income exceeds the character’s XP threshold, he earns XP equal to the difference. Domain income is earned monthly. Magistrates treat their salary as domain income (p. 342) for XP purposes.”
=>
“A character can earn XP from his domain income. Domain income is the total of the ruler’s land, service, tax, trade, and tribute revenue, less his garrison, liturgy, maintenance, tithe, and tribute expenses. Henchmen vassals also subtract their expected monthly wage (p. 168) from domain income. If domain income exceeds the character’s XP threshold, he earns XP equal to the difference. Domain income is earned monthly. Magistrates treat their salary as domain income (p. 342) for XP purposes.”

P. 423, Example box, delete the sentence “If he were a henchman, he’d earn half that, or 3,000 XP.”

P. 441, Beastman Troops table, BR column
Kobold, Weasel Rider 0.0114 => 0.114
Goblin, Bowman 0.06 => 0.07
Hobgoblin, Medium cavalry 0.151 => 0.155

P. 441, Beastman Troops table, Wages column
Goblin, Bowman 3gp => 6gp

NOTE: The data elsewhere for beastmen is correct. This table was just not properly updated during an editing pass.

P. 500: “Somirean eyes are large, almond shaped, and of dark brown or black color.” => “Shebatean eyes are large, almond shaped, and of dark brown or black color.”

P. 507: “If the creature is grabbed, grappled, or restrained by a large or imposing creature, it suffer a penalty on this throw” => “If the creature is grabbed, restrained, or wrestled by a large or imposing creature, it suffer a penalty on this throw”

the Auran Empire setting that you can use for your campaign." => “In Appendix A, we have provided a number of dungeon maps from the Auran Empire setting that you can use for your campaign.”

P. 236: The justification in the bottom paragraph on the left column and right column is difficult to read and should be adjusted.

P. 240, Portcullis Trap: Remove the unnecessary line breaks after “also” on the 1st level and 2nd level trap entries.

many columns to the right, while a negative number moves the
difficulty that many columns to the left."

P. 276, EXAMPLE box (bottom right): " EXAMPLE: A party of four 14th level characters find themselves in front of a 1st level dungeon. Bored, they decide to slaughter its inhabitants. The Judge informs them that this dungeon has twelve encounters; they laugh and say they will fight all twelve. Facing 11 encounters on a single foray has a difficulty modifier of -3. The listed level for Effortless on a first level dungeon is 6-7, so the 14th level characters are off the table to the right. There is no additional bonus for being off the table to the right; there is always some chance of failure, but sometimes there is no chance of success. Their total resolution modifier is 8 – 3 = +5. They roll 1d12+1d8+5 on the Resolution Table and score a 20 – a Stupendous success. They slaughter the dungeon’s inhabitants mercilessly and reap 200% of normal treasure." =>
“EXAMPLE: A party of four 14th level characters find themselves in front of a 1st level dungeon. Bored, they decide to slaughter its inhabitants. The Judge informs them that this dungeon has twelve encounters; they laugh and say they will fight all twelve. Facing 12 encounters on a single foray shifts them three columns to the left. Being 14th level in a 1st level dungeon shifts them four columns to the right. That shifts them one column to right, landing them off the table with no additional bonus. Their total resolution modifier is therefore +8. They roll 1d12+1d8+8 on the Resolution Table and score a 20 – a Stupendous success. They slaughter the dungeon’s inhabitants mercilessly and reap 200% of normal treasure.”

P. 283, “Unsatisfactory: On a Dreadful result, (1d6) × (scaling modifier)

P. 299, EXAMPLE box under Magic Items, “The standard elven spellsword was built with Hit Dice Value 1, Fighting Value 2, Arcane Value 1, Elf Value 4.” => “The standard elven spellsword was built with Hit Dice Value 1, Fighting Value 2, Arcane Value 1, Elf Value 3.”

P. 371, Standard Spell Progression 75% Delayed table is incorrect. At Class Level 11, instead of 3 5th and no 6th, it should be 2 5th and 1 6th. Therefore class Level 11 row needs to be revised to read 4 3 3 2 2 1.

P. 383: Magic Research “Research Spells” section and “Magic Research Caster Level and Prerequisites” table incorrectly permit Prayerful casters to research spells. Prayerful casters cannot research spells.
