Hey, I have a question about huge battles. Are there any specific rules for big battles like two armies clashing? If so, where would I find them? And specifically when it comes spell duration, does it change at all from small encounters to big battles? Also, are turns 10 minutes or 10 seconds? Sorry for the load of questions, I’m just a lil confused and since they’re generally related I figured I’d throw it in one big post.
- If you’re playing with ACKS I (1st ed) the specific rules for battles in ACKS are found in the “Domains at War” sourcebook. There are two parts, “D@W: Campaigns” for an abstract system of big battles, and “D@W: Battles” for a tabletop miniature wargame of big battles.
If with ACKS II (2nd ed), then you can find the Domains at War: Campaigns rules included in the “Maneuvers” and “Battles” chapters of the Revised Rulebook. You can still use “Domains at War: Battles” for even more detailed tabletop battle rules.

Spell duration does not change from small encounters to big battles. Spells are always defined in lengths of “rounds” “turns” “hours” or “days”.

In both editions of ACKS, the basic units of time are the “round” and the “turn”. Combat is usually handled in rounds and exploration in turns. However, how they interact changes a bit in first and second edition.
3a. In ACKS I, a “round” is 10 seconds and a “turn” is 10 minutes." There are 60 rounds per turn. Mass combat in Domains at War: Campaigns is fought in (a small number of) turns. But Mass combat in Domains at War: Battles is fought in rounds (many rounds).
3b. In ACKS II, a “round” is now defined as a “short period of time ranging from a few seconds to 2 minutes” and a “turn” is “a few minutes to a quater hour”. There are 10 rounds per turn. Mass combat in ACKS II is fought in turns, but mass combat in Domains at War: Battles (if optionally used) is fought in rounds.
- There are four different scales of battle - platoon, company, battalion, and brigade. When using Domains at War: Battles only, battalion rounds count as 2 normal rounds, and brigade rounds count as 4 normal rounds.
Sorry that the answer is complex but there’s two different systems (abstract and miniature wargame) with two editions.
Nah man don’t apologize. That was incredibly detailed in the best way, thank you.
