Dwarven War-Cook

· Key Attributes: STR, INT

· Requirements: CON 9

· Hit Dice: 1d8

· Maximum Level: 10

Dwarves are generally happy to stay in the fastness of their mountain homes, but when need strikes, they are famous for their endurance in brutal conditions far away from civilization. Dwarves will stoutly claim that they simply have a stoic disposition and endure hardship with grace, while elvish liars claim that dwarves simply lack the sense of aesthetics needed to appreciate the benefits of good food. On the contrary, dwarves are known for their refined palate and love of well-cooked food. Dwarven expeditions that are forced to rely on salt pork and hardtack are renowned for the volume of complaining! The secret of dwarven expeditionary prowess lies in the Dwarven War-Cooks, a dedicated branch of the Cook’s Guild that provides good provender even in the deepest wild.

Combat Characteristics:

Due to both the need to hunt for food in the wilds, and the risk of becoming the hunted ones, the Dwarven War-Cook is a stout combatant, though not as skilled as a dedicated vaultguard.

Combat Proficiencies:

The war-cook is proficient in all armor up to and including chainmail. He is skilled in the use of all tiny, small, and medium melee weapons, as well as greataxes, knives, slings, shortbows, crossbows, and arbalests. He is proficient in the weapon & shield and two-handed combat styles.

Combat Progression:

The war-cook advances in attack and saving throws at two per three levels (the same as vaultguards). They increase their damage rolls by +1 at 1st level, and by a further +1 at 3rd, 6th, 0th, and 12th level. They can cleave a number of times per round equal their level.

Starting Class Powers

At the start of play, Dwarven War-Cooks have the following class powers:

Attention to Detail: War-Cooks gain a +3 bonus on proficiency throws for any proficiencies they learn. (This bonus has already been factored into the war-cook’s class abilities.)

Journeyman Chef: The War-Cook is, in fact, a cook, and a quite skilled one. He can create 20gp of tasty, healthy food per month serving as a line chef at a vault cafeteria, and increase the productivity of up to 3 apprentices by 50%. He can identify dishes, notable cooks, and other culinary factoids with a proficency throw of 4+. (This class ability is equal to two ranks of the Craft (Cooking) proficency.

Survival: The War-Cook’s specialty is in wilderness cooking, and this translates to a variety of tricks for surviving the wilds. He can automatically succeed in gathering enough food for himself to survive, even in storage environments, and can gather more food, find water, and other survival tasks at +4 (see RR. p. 276).) (This class proficency is equal to the general proficency Survival)

Trapping: War-Cooks can build and maintain traps at a rate of 1sp per hour. They can find and remove wilderness (but not dungeon) traps as a thief of half of their level. They can skin and field-dress killed creatures and extract some special components. (This power is in all respects identical to the Trapping proficency)

Loadbearing: Spices, salt, and cooking pans weigh a lot, and the War-Cook has learned all the packing tricks to reduce the burden of the precious goods he’s unhappy to let out of his sight. He reduces his effective encumbrance by 2 stone for purposes calculating movement speed.

Cleanliness: The War-Cook knows all the tricks to make even the most inedible-seeming slop digestible. He can cast purify food and water at-will with a casting time of one turn.

Additional Class Powers:

Better Out than In (5th level): The War-Cook has learned how to deal with even the most disastrous of culinary misadventures. Once per day, he can cast the spell neutralize poison with a casting time of one round. This cures all poisons, not just consumed poisons, though it induces vomiting in every case.

Put them in the pot! (5th): When leading henchmen, followers, and mercenaries whose most recent meal the war-cook has overseen the preparation of, those fed gain +1 to their morale. Likewise, this bonus is gained when leading in the hunt for a creature intended to cooked and eaten by the hunters.

Master Provisioner (9th): Once per week, the War-Cook can cast Create Food with a casting time of one turn. His caster level is equal to his level. No, we don’t know where he gets the food from, he just rummages around and finds hundreds of pounds of almost-stale food… somewhere. The Cook’s Guild has refused all requests from the Tower of Knowledge to investigate the matter further.

Dwarven Culinary School (9th): At 9th level, the War-Cook’s fame has spread far and wide. If he constructs or otherwise acquires a vault worth at least 15,000gp in stronghold value to serve as his culinary school and prestige restaurant, he will attract 1d6 Dwarven War-Cooks of levels 1-3 (roll 1d3 to determine each’s level) seeking to learn under their culinary hero, as well as 10d4 1st-level dwarven mercenaries capable of serving as bouncers and dishwashers. He must pay his followers the normal rates for mercenaries and henchmen of their type or they will depart. See RR. p. 333 for additional rules.

Racial Abilities:

Sensitivity to Rock and Stone: The War-Cook gains a +1 bonus to surprise rolls when underground. When using Adventuring proficiency to search or listen, they succeed on a proficiency throw of 14+ (instead of the usual 18+). If separately proficient in Searching they gain a +4 bonus to their throw instead. If separately proficient in Listening, they gain a +2 bonus to their throw instead.
Dwarf Tongues: The War-Cook speaks four bonus languages: Dwarf, Gnome, Goblin, and Kobold.
Hardy: The War-Cook gains a +3 bonus on Blast saving throws and a +4 bonus on all other saving throws (already factored into their save progression).
