In-Character 5 Hunt Through the Dark
I will climb down and join the rest of the party in the looting as any decent thief should.
Slinging his bow, Kaul slips over the side and begins to downclimb. He manages to descend about halfway before losing his grip. There is a moment of blind panic, his hands scrabbling against the side of the building, before Kaul manages to grab the end of protruding piece of wood, arresting his fall before it begins.

Kaul spends a few moments slowing his breathing before continuing his now shaky descent.
...since no one else is on it, I'll head from there over to the ill-omened sack to check it out.  If I happen to see the spear I threw on the way over I'll grab it first.  I know it's dark, but it should have hit the torch-bearer very near there.
Hengist makes his way along the street towards the abandoned sack, spotting the dark line of his spear against the road's lighter background of bare dirt, lying near the far side. He quickly retrieves his weapon, hearing a low moan from the burlap sack as he does so. Turning sharply, Hengist eyes the burlap carefully, seeing it shift slightly as he watches it.
Gwydion provides assistance with looting. In his efforts, he attempts to be very thorough, checking boots, belts, armpits, and hats.
The black clad man bears a small sheathe strapped to his back, seemingly a fit for the stiletto. A strange lump in his boot reveals itself to be a small, finely detailed bronze key. A second, larger and more ordinary key of iron is in his other boot.

Gwydion then heads over to the other corpses. As he approaches them, he can see, even by the light of the moon, that something is entirely wrong with them. The proportions are wrong, the size is wrong, and the head is wrong.

The nearest one lies crumpled on its stomach in the spot where it fell. Gwydion reaches down and rolls the cloaked figure onto its back, the body flopping over, revealing a visage beneath its hood: a grotesque, pig-faced amalgam of animal and man stares back at the elf, a mockery of a normal human or demihuman.
'Hey, ya'll - Kerrick rode down the road that way after someone - loot could wait, perhaps?'

Masov will trot at whatever pace allows him to reload down the road.
Turning from the others' looting, Masov heads south towards the gate, drawing the string on his crossbow as he jogs. There's enough light from the moon to make out the difference between buildings and sky, or grass and dirt road, but little beyond that is visible on any north-facing landscape. The dark silhouette of the palisade looms ahead, the gate standing open.
Kerrick continues speaking to the former torchbearer. "The eye of Solis is turned away from you. By your own choices you have entered into darkness, and forfeit the protection of the light."
"Darkness? We walk in light, and carry out Solis' great work, you cur! We are saving this town from darkness!" the man spits out. He pauses then, before continuing, almost hesitant, "The spider warned you would prattle on with such drivel...but we are in...the light?" For a moment, he seems almost confused, his rigid posture sagging...
"I offer you one last chance to surrender. We require an explanation of your crimes, and you may be allowed to purchase your life with one."
The man's posture returns to being ramrod straight, and an undeniable mettle is back in his voice: "You shall not stop me, servant of night!" he intones, then moves to pass around Kerrick's steed...

Kerrick Helmsworth

“So be it. You have chosen the night.”

(Assuming I can still see him, Kerrick will punch him.)
... He quickly retrieves his weapon, hearing a low moan from the burlap sack as he does so. Turning sharply, Hengist eyes the burlap carefully, seeing it shift slightly as he watches it.
"Hellooo?  Don't be alarmed, we're heavily armed killers with no fixed abode, so you're in good hands now.  Uh...  What I mean is, we've just killed the people who had you in the sack, not people like you in sacks, so you're safe now.  Just, ah... maybe say something for me so I know you're not a tied up zombie kid in a sack?  That would make me feel better about this whole letting you out of the bag thing."

If the sack is untied I'll lift up the opening with the butt of the spear to see inside better.  If it's tied off I'll stick the spear into the dirt by it's point and draw a knife, but I hope to hear an intelligible word before I cut it open.

Gwydion rifles through the gear and garments of the pig-faced humanoids, and is soon joined by Kaul as he comes round east corner from the other side of the inn. Each of the humanoids seems to carry a handful of coins in a filthy pouch, and crudely forged iron weapons: cleavers, axes, and similarly heavy and vicious-looking implements. As Kaul checks for necklaces, he notices a strange scar on the muscled chest of one of the humanoids, in the middle of its breastbone. Looking at the other bodies, it seems they all bear it, and it appears like nothing so much as a brand, after the fashion in which men mark their livestock. Gwydion notices Kaul's examination, and peers over his shoulder at the peculiar brand...

The party finds 130sp, 3 iron cleavers (treat as short swords), 10 iron hand axes, 1 iron battle axe, and 3 iron hammers (treat as warhammers).

Back on the road, the moaning rises from the sack again as Hengist warily lifts the hem with his spear-butt. It takes him a moment to make out what he's seeing by moonlight, but it seems to be a body! Gangly limbs begin untangling themselves, and Hengist can see the face and scalp are blood-covered...

Off to the south, Masov leaves the town by the south gate, his crossbow now loaded. A short distance away he can make out the silhouette of Kerrick astride his steed. Before the Paladin stands a cloaked figure, although as Masov tries to focus on him he slips from view in a fashion that leaves the Bard feeling disoriented. From the corner of his eye he can see the cloaked figure attempt to move around Kerrick's steed...
"So be it. You have chosen the night." (Assuming I can still see him, Kerrick will punch him.)
...at which point Kerrick jerks the reins, wheeling his horse toward the cloaked figure. Then a strange thing happens; Kerrick raises his fist, as if to strike the cloaked figure a blow, then hesitates, reeling slightly in the saddle. The cloaked figure walks directly past the Paladin unmolested...

GWYDION

Gwydion attempts to link the brand to something more familiar. “Have you ever encountered something like this, Kaul? It reminds me of… Hmm. What does it remind me of?”

Andrew

“There are spells that stop you from being attacked. They usually keep you from attacking too.” Andrew will see to Hengist’s wounds casting his one healing spell for the day if he has it still…

Hengist

I'll take a step back and reverse my spear into a guard stance.  "Kid?  Now would be a very good time to say something for me.  Anything, really.  Just... words, alright?  It'd be in both our interests."  If I'm attacked, or if I don't hear any intelligible words and I can make out anything I'm certain is a mortal wound, I'll spear it.  Otherwise I'm waiting to be absolutely certain this isn't some bloodied but living sacrifice.

A bird's head flanked by outstretched feathered wings, perhaps?

Hengist is a short distance away, but appears to be occupied with threatening some kind of lump-in-the-road with his spear...

Do you want to duck in and attempt to cast on him anyway? Didn't Andrew cast his spell earlier in the day to heal Hengist after the fight with the elves?

I'll take a step back and reverse my spear into a guard stance.  "Kid?  Now would be a very good time to say something for me.  Anything, really.  Just... words, alright?  It'd be in both our interests."
As the body in the sack unfurls, you realize you look not upon a child, but an old woman! A deep gash runs across the paper-thin skin above her left brow, and her face is covered in a sticky mess of blood that looks black in the moonlight.

Her eyes roll in her sockets as she whispers, "...help me..."

Miska keeps an eye out along the road.

Hengist

"Finally, a villager I'm not going to kill!  Hey Andrew, can you do anything for this lady?"  I'll take the spear upright in one hand and offer my arm to help the old woman up.

GWYDION

Gwydion frowns at the brand-like scarring before resuming his methodical efforts to discover anything of value on the corpses. Gwydion pockets the metal flask with the waxed cork. Once complete, he then looks for the darts he threw at the climbing foes.

"Who will take the glassware flask? The leather?"

Andrew

“I can try.” Andrew will take a look at the old woman Hengist is helping and use his healing skills to see if he can make any difference.
