I’ve been wanting to map out my homemade setting but I can’t find any decent hex paper, would regular ol’ graph paper work in lieu of hex paper?
Grids on maps, either square or hex, are simply an abstraction that makes calculating distances easier. Hexes are more suitable for outdoor maps as wilderness travel has far greater freedom of movement than interior spaces, and hexes provides six directional options without the “stretching” that occurs when moving diagonally on a square grid.
Secondarily, many of the ACKS rules tie into hexes, particulary at higher levels during domain play, and this will be complicated by not using a hex grid. Taken together, you’re going to save yourself a lot of hassle by using hex paper.
If you’re having trouble finding hex paper, there is a download on the Autarch site that can be printed at home or a print shop, providing nice, different-scale hex sheets here. Failing that, any decent store carrying stationary, such as Staples, will almost certainly carry notebooks and notepads with hex paper. You can also find numerous options on Amazon for under $10.
Good luck!
