Am I correct in understanding that there are no weapons in ACKS that actually have reach similar to how that concept was defined in later versions of D&D? While a spear could be used to fight from the second rank, does a spear actually allow a PC to engage a monster in melee from a distance if there is no actual intervening rank between the PC and monster?

“One rank” is used as a measure of distance, not a specific requirement of formation.
