Taking templates further

Templates do a good job of making character creation quicker but I have a group of players that have very little interest in learning rules which translates into difficulty when it comes to making choices at level up time (we tried playing Pathfinder and it was a nightmare with the feat selections).
Don’t get me wrong, they are great players and they like to play role playing games, but I was thinking, why not take templates further, call them Paths or something, and layout the proficiency choices all the way to a classes maximum level?
Of course I can do this myself but I thought it was a decent idea that others may find useful as well.
